Located in Chenghua in Chengdu, this mixed-use development consists of 400,000 sf of residential and 700,000 sf of commercial totaling over 2,000,000 sf. The master plan for this site was conceived of as a family of different tower types united in material appearance, staggered in a way so that they look past each other, not into each other in order to maximize views. The cladding of the towers unites a modern floor to ceiling glazing system on top with a metal panel skin at the base. The metal base receives a series of punches of varying sizes so that at a distance they appear to be the windows of a train rushing by a viewer. This was a symbolic reference to the main developer’s origins in the rail industry. The punched windows provide light into the lower portions of the tower and provide a logical connection to the retail podium which by necessity requires much less glass for its display walls. The offset nature of the rectangular podium blocks allow for the large scale of the spaces to be broken into more manageable components. These retails components also are embedded into the below grade plaza which allows light into the basement levels and provides a tighter bond between site and building. The outdoor terraces on the podium roof levels offer unique outdoor spaces for retail shopper. The sunken plazas also provide direct connections to the concourse level, basement retail stores, metro station link and car/bike parking.
